From Pre-Access to Passion: Inspiring Stories from Childcare

Are you looking to return to education and interested in working in the childcare sector?

We asked a group of Childcare Foundation Degree students about their journeys at the College after returning to education and studying our Level 2 Pre-Access to a Higher Education course at Barnsley College University Centre.

Terri Sherlock

Terri Sherlock joined the College in 2021, studying Level 2 Pre-Access to Health, Childcare and Education, then moved on to Level 3 Access to Higher Education in Childhood Studies. She is currently studying Supporting Early Years Foundation Degree and Level 2 Understanding Autism.

Terri said: “I have progressed from Level 2 to my Foundation Degree because I want to work with nursery-aged children either in a primary school or private setting. The knowledge I gain through these courses, I can apply to my placement working in a primary school twice a week, as well as in the future when I secure a permanent job as a Nursery or Teaching Assistant.

“I decided to study Childcare as, since the age of thirteen, I have looked after my younger brothers, one of whom has special needs. I’m currently my brother’s carer and support him with his personal care. I’ve wanted to study Childcare since I was a teenager, however, I was not able to pursue my dream when I left school due to my caring responsibilities and my mum being ill. I am now hoping to achieve that dream soon.

“I enjoy College and have had a good experience. My College tutors have been very supportive towards my caring responsibilities and my medical condition. I have met some lovely people and gained some friends I hope to keep in contact with.”

Claire Beaumont

Claire Beaumont also joined the College in 2021, studying Level 2 Pre-Access to Health, Childcare and Education, then moved on to Level 3 Access to Higher Education in Childhood Studies. She is currently studying Supporting Learning and Additional Needs Foundation Degree.

Claire added: “I chose to study at the College because it was very close to home and easy to get there. I wanted to start a journey in becoming a Special Educational Co-ordinator (SENCO) Teaching Assistant role, so joined the College to gain the relevant knowledge, skills and experience. I already had some knowledge of Special Educational Needs as I have a nephew with autism, but I wanted to build upon this.

“I would recommend the College as there is a variety of courses and progression paths, allowing you to advance from entry-level to Higher Education. Once I finish my Foundation Degree, I plan to progress onto a Top-Up Degree course to gain my full degree.

“I enjoy my course because I receive great support from my course tutors, as well as the Higher Education Study Skills tutors in the Library. Their support really boosts the academic level of my assignments, helping me secure better grades.”

Angela Kendell

Angela Kendell

Angela Kendell joined the College in 2020 starting with Functional Skills in English and Maths, before completing a Level 2 Pre-Access to Higher Education in Health, Childcare and Education, Level 3 Access to Higher Education in Childhood Studies and is now studying a Supporting Early Years Foundation Degree.

Angela said: “I chose to study at the College because I live in Barnsley and its local to me. I’d recommend studying at the College as it is diverse, the staff are helpful and there is financial and health support available if it is needed. I have been thoroughly enjoying my time at College and love studying within Childcare.

“My one bit of advice to anyone thinking of studying at Barnsley College or Barnsley College University Centre would be to make sure you visit an Open Day and you will see the helpful and kind staff in action!”
