Maths Functional Skills Part-time

Start Date / Duration

Please apply for the course to receive further information on a suitable start date. Class attendance will be one class for three hours per week. You will be required to attend College for an initial assessment, mock and final examinations.

Entry requirements

  • Students must be aged 19+ years of age. Learners aged 16-18 will do maths and English as part of their full-time study programme
  • No formal entry requirements or previous experience is necessary to undertake these programmes
  • Before you start, you will undergo an initial and diagnostic assessment to identify which particular skills you need to work on and the relevant units from this suite

Functional Skills Maths qualification.

Course overview

The qualification is available from Entry 1 to Level 2.  It contains a range of units which develop Maths and English skills needed in work and life.

These programmes are flexible. If you want to improve your reading, writing and numeracy skills, or want to gain a qualification for the skills you already have, a Skills for Life qualification could be for you. Functional Skills qualifications are designed to help you develop the skills you use in everyday life.

Functional skills classes run continually throughout the year. You will need an assessment to determine the level you start at and you will be advised of the details on application.

Course content

Functional Skills qualifications in Mathematics assess three interrelated process skills:

  • Representing: selecting the mathematics and information to model a situation
  • Analysing: processing and using mathematics
  • Interpreting: interpreting and communicating the results of the analysis

You will sit an examination at the end of the course.

You will require writing materials and a ring binder.

On completion of these programmes, you may wish to progress to other College programmes in either this area or another area of study.

How much does the course cost?

This course is fully funded to anyone who is aged 19+ and does not already have a grade 4/C in this subject. For applicants who do not meet all these criteria, the full cost of the course is £500. This course is funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and/or West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA).

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
