Catering: Introduction to Culinary Skills and Hospitality Service Level 1 Full-time

This course starts in September and will be completed in one year.

Entry requirements

  • Two GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English.
  • Positive school report.

If you don’t currently meet these entry requirements, you maybe able to study a Level 1 Foundation Learning course.

You will achieve

Introduction to Culinary Skills and Hospitality Service Level 1 Certificate City & Guilds.

Course overview

This course is ideal for you if you are interested in the hospitality and catering industry where you will be introduced to professional cookery skills in stove, larder and Patisserie. You will also be introduced to front of house skills including customer care and food and beverage service, as well as studying subjects such as food safety and healthy eating.

Course content

 

Year one, you will complete the main disciplines of food with items such as,

  • Stocks, soups and sauces
  • Fermented goods (doughnuts and pastries)
  • Traditional stews and curries
  • Pot roast meats and poultry
  • Fish and shellfish

Course Themes:

  • Basic cooking skills
  • Front of house skills including customer care and food and beverage service
  • Food safety
  • Healthy eating

 

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

You will require lever arch files and plastic wallets and you will be expected to supply your own notepads, writing and general stationery equipment.  A small number of textbooks may be recommended at the start of the programme.  Details of other equipment and kitchen uniform you may need will be discussed at interview.

Employment- On successful completion of this programme the qualification will enhance your prospects for employment within areas of the hospitality and catering. The skills you acquire could provide the foundations for a job within a kitchen, restaurant or bar.

Education- You could progress to Level 2 Culinary Skills and Hospitality Service

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
