Start Date / Duration

This course next starts from 16 September. It is studied in your own time but must be completed in ten weeks. You are expected to commit at least three hours per week to studying.

Entry requirements

There is no requirement for you to have achieved any qualifications or units prior to undertaking this qualification. However, a reasonable standard of computing skills will be required.

You must be aged 19 or above to study this course.

Course overview

Increase your knowledge of Cybersecurity from your own home! This free single unit qualification is designed for you to learn about cybercrime and you will understand routine protective methods used to maintain cybersecurity including the principles of vulnerability and penetration testing and user access control.

The qualification is also designed for job roles in other industries where specific digital skills are required, such as finance, marketing and machining and manufacturing.

Course content

The purpose of this qualification is for you to learn about cybercrime. You will study routine protective methods used to maintain cybersecurity including the principles of vulnerability and penetration testing and user access control. You will learn about cybercrime and the risks and effects it has on individuals and organisations.

This course can be studied in your own time from home – all you need is access to the internet. You will have access to regular support from tutors.

You will be assessed using a range of methods such as practical tasks and written coursework that will culminate in a portfolio of evidence. This portfolio will be used to determine your grade.

You will need an internet-connected device such as a laptop or computer.

This course is studied online in your own time.

This course will give you the skills for employment or to progress with your education by moving on to Level 2 Award in Cybersecurity, then Level 3 Networking and Cybersecurity.

Extra information

Part-time courses are only available for learners who are 19 years old and above. You may not have to pay for this course if you are employed but earn below £21,255 a year, or if you receive Job Seekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit. If you are unemployed, actively seeking employment and receive Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit, Income Support or WFTC then you may also receive funding for this course. You will need to provide evidence of your eligibility which will be checked at enrolment.

This course is funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and/or West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). You must be living in the South or West Yorkshire regions to qualify for funding.
