  • There are no formal requirements for this course
  • Students will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme

Course overview

If you are a speaker of another language and would like to improve your English and maths skills then this is the course for you! As well as English and maths you will also get the chance to study different subjects within College to help you decide on future study or career choices. The course is flexible and we can create an individual learning programme that fits your needs and abilities which will help to develop your skills, knowledge and the confidence necessary to progress onto further study.

Course content

You will have the opportunity to

  • Develop your English speaking and listening, reading and writing skills
  • Develop your ability to use maths skills in everyday life
  • Choose a vocational option that interests you
  • Be involved in cross-college enrichment activities

There are five components to the course and you will study the following subjects each week:

  • ESOL
  • Functional skills maths
  • Vocational options such as Sport or Hair and Beauty

You will also have the opportunity to take part in:

  • Group work and discussion
  • Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLE)
  • Enrichment activities

You will be assessed throughout this course.

How much does the course cost?

This course is free

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

This can be added to your study programme.
