Start Date / Duration

You may start an apprenticeship at any time. This apprenticeship will take 24 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • Specific entry requirements for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer but ideally you will hold five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English and maths.
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship vacancies.
You will achieve

City and Guilds Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment Diploma.
NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Construction Design and Drafting Standard

Course overview

This apprenticeship provides the skills and knowledge required to produce designs and drawings for structures, piping, electrical systems, control and instrumentation systems and mechanical components used in industrial and commercial construction.

Course content

You will study:

  • Health and Safety
  • Sustainable Construction
  • Mathematics in Construction
  • Science and Materials in Construction
  • Construction Technology and Design
  • Building Technology and Construction
  • AutoCAD and Revit or Tekla and BIM

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by assignments, on-line tests and workplace observation. There will be an end point assessment for this apprenticeship

What equipment will I need?

All equipment will be provided.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and attend classes if required at Barnsley College’s The Cube (Construction Centre), Honeywell Lane, Barnsley S75 1BP

What can I do next?

On completion of this pathway, you could progress onto further qualifications specific to your work context. This could be a Level 4 Construction and the Built Environment HNC course or apprenticeship.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
